Buzzi Cement proudly announced the launch of the CO₂ capture pilot project at its Monselice plant in Italy, in collaboration with Nuada.

Nuada’s technology is based on an electrical system that separates CO₂ from industrial combustion gases using pressure instead of heat. This technology promises to revolutionize carbon capture in the cement industry. The plant, which is currently fully operational, captures 1 ton of CO₂ per day from cement combustion gases.

The start of these tests seeks to accelerate the decarbonisation of the cement industry and represents a significant step towards achieving the company’s sustainability goals.

This pilot project marks an important milestone in carbon capture innovation and demonstrates the performance of Nuada’s next-generation technology within a cement manufacturing environment. Nuada has developed a solution that captures carbon in an energy-efficient manner by combining advanced solid sorbents called metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with a mature vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) process.

Dr. Conor Hamill, co-CEO of Nuada, mentioned that the carbon capture technology used is the most energy efficient yet developed, a solution that redefines the decarbonization landscape for hard-to-abate industries like the cement industry. Dr. José Casaban, co-CEO of Nuada, commented that the plant demonstrates the robustness, scalability and revolutionary benefits of the innovative capture system they are using.

This project is supported by the Global Concrete and Cement Association (GCCA) and was initiated through the GCCA Innovandi Open Challenge program, an initiative that fosters collaboration between leading cement producers and innovative technology providers to decarbonize cement production. The cement sector currently accounts for 7% of global carbon emissions and, according to the AMCC’s Net Zero Roadmap, carbon capture is the main lever towards decarbonisation.

Luigi Buzzi, CTO of Buzzi, stated that the company has always been at the forefront of technology and the search for innovative solutions and they are very excited to host Nuada’s advanced carbon capture technology and thus confirm the high expectations that this technology can play a leading role in this industry’s decarbonization journey.

Buzzi confirms his willingness to go deeper into this and other topics, to raise awareness in the community about the efforts made towards the ambitious goal of neutrality set for 2050.

Nuada is a carbon capture company set to decarbonize heavy industries through its capture technology. The company builds energy-efficient filtration machines that capture CO2 from industrial waste gases, allowing emitters in difficult sectors to reduce their carbon footprint with minimal impact on their bottom line.

Buzzi is an international multi-regional group based in Casale Monferrato (AL) that is mainly dedicated to the production of cement and ready-mixed concrete. The group has a presence in 14 countries, employs approximately 10,000 people and in its operations focuses on equity, coherence, long-term vision, stable shareholders and dedicated management. It pursues value creation through deep knowledge, process innovation, efficient and environmentally friendly assets, offering its own clients high-quality, increasingly sustainable products.

Buzzi Unicem is an Italian company belonging to the Buzzi group and specializes in the production and sale of cement and aggregates. The company employs approximately 1,500 people and is present in Italy with 8 cement plants and 3 grinding plants.
