Votorantim Cimentos was part of the Envirotech international congress, which took place in Lisbon on March 10 – 13, 2024. The company presented its sustainability commitments and its emissions reduction objectives that they have planned for 2030.

The decarbonization strategy that the company has committed to is based on four key pillars:1. To incorporate the best available techniques in order to optimize the production process and improve energy efficiency. 2. To replace fossil fuels with alternative fuels from different sources in cement kilns, which is thermal substitution. 3. To manufacture cements with a lower carbon footprint by using alternative raw materials from other industries. 4. To use carbon capture technologies considered essential to achieve climate neutrality.

Pablo Viedma director of the Alconera cement plant (Badajoz) was in charge of presenting these challenges at the conference and he also took the opportunity at the forum to share their 2021-2023 period achievements for the specific plant that he directs. The plant director

highlighted that given the energy recovery that they have implemented, the Badajoz plant has saved about 60,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere in the last two years, which can be equivalent to planting more than two million trees.

Envirotech 2024 brought together leading cement manufacturers, technical experts, analysts and other key actors to discuss the latest trends for technologies, processes and policies that the cement industry is implementing and supporting in order to achieve climate neutrality and a better future for generations to come.
